BIKELAB

ARTIST: JON DENARO

CLIENT: PERTH TRANSPORT AUTHORITY

LOCATION: GREENWOOD TRAIN STATION

COMPLETED: 2011

This captivating sculpture emerged from the innovative 'BIKELAB' project, an arts residency concept that we developed and implemented in collaboration with the Awesome Arts Festival across Western Australia.

Our objective was to delve into the principles of construction and deconstruction, allowing for an immersive arts residency focused on sculpture and the idea of making. Inspired by the prevalent theme of mechanistic deconstruction within Indigenous communities, we sought to explore the transformative power of dismantling and reassembling.

To bring this concept to life, we acquired bicycles that had been abandoned at train stations, generously provided by the PTA. These bikes became the foundation of our artwork, symbolizing the spirit of 'bikability' and the dynamic nature of cycling.

Through a process of creative exploration, we ingeniously connected these bikes to upscaled Meccano plates, forming a visually captivating and thought-provoking form. This amalgamation of materials and components gave rise to a sculpture that embodies the essence of movement, connectivity, and the transformative potential of repurposing everyday objects.

By repurposing discarded bicycles and integrating them with Meccano structures, we not only showcase the artistic beauty in deconstruction but also highlight the inherent sustainability and environmental consciousness of repurposing. The sculpture serves as a powerful symbol, evoking the spirit of exploration, community, and the harmonious relationship between humanity and technology.

The 'BIKELAB' project stands as a testament to the transformative power of art, community engagement, and the celebration of the everyday objects that surround us. It represents our commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and sustainability, while also paying homage to the cultural influences that inspire us.
