"Currents" is an integrated facade sculpture that captures the essence of the South Perth River, evoking its fluidity and tranquillity. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the sculpture utilises curved forms made of lightweight aluminium sheets.

The sculpture's design is inspired by the interplay between light and water, aiming to create an immersive experience that reflects the surroundings. The undulating curves mimic the gentle ripples and currents of the river, creating an ever-changing play of light and shadow.

To accomplish the metal shaping process, we enlisted the expertise of Aaron Fry, a skilled Sculptor who transforms traditional metal shaping techniques into creative artworks and bespoke furniture. Aaron taught the VOXLAB team how to shape the unique curved pieces for this project using tools such as the bead roller, shrinker, stretcher and traditional hand tools, ensuring the artist's touch in the process. Once the VOXLAB team completed the 300+ shell pieces, we meticulously arranged them to ensure they harmonised as a cohesive whole.

The choice of desaturated blue tones adds to the artwork's serene and reflective quality. The carefully selected hues evoke the colours of the river, subtly capturing its tranquil atmosphere. The desaturation allows the sculpture to blend harmoniously with the surroundings, providing a seamless integration with the environment.

Bec, our Creative Director and Painter, guided the colour selection process. We extensively researched colour options through powder coating and obtained various blue and green samples. To maintain the luminous shine of the unfinished aluminium, we used a combination of clear coating and powder coating.

"Currents" not only pays homage to the South Perth River but also serves as a contemporary landmark that engages and captivates passers-by. Its innovative use of materials and dynamic forms creates a visual spectacle, adding a touch of elegance and harmony to the urban landscape.
